What is Kinesiology Taping?
Kinesiology Taping is a therapeutic and rehabilitative taping technique that involves the application of a fabric-based elastic tape that adheres directly to the skin.
The thickness and elasticity of Kinesiology Tape is designed to closely mimic skin, allowing the tape to be applied without being restrictive or constrictive. The tape can also withstand getting wet and is not medicated, allowing it to be worn comfortably for several days. The therapeutic benefits are therefore available to the injured area over an extended period, accelerating the healing process.
Unlike conventional taping or strapping techniques which are designed to provide rigid support, Kinesiology Tape does not restrict your range of motion and is therefore easily worn during everyday activities, training sessions or sport (even swimming).
What is Kinesiology Taping used for?
Kinesiology Tape is used to provide stability and dynamic support to muscles and joints. It is used for a variety of musculoskeletal, biomechanical, neurological and other medical conditions.
It is used to improve circulation, reduce inflammation and bruising, prolonging the benefits of other remedial therapeutic interventions such as Bowen Therapy. This supports the rehabilitation process, re-education of previously injured muscles and accelerates injury recovery.
Kinesiology Tape is also used by many athletes, both amateur and professional, to enhance performance, reduce muscle fatigue, cramping and DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness).
Whilst Kinesiology Tape is a common sight in the sporting world, there are many every day benefits offered by therapeutic taping from improving posture behind your office desk to relieving discomfort experienced during pregnancy.
Benefits of Kinesiology Tape include:
- Relief from acute and chronic pain
- Reduced bruising and swelling
- Improved lymphatic drainage
- Accelerated injury recovery rates
- Biomechanical and musculoskeletal support
- Improved body awareness
- Improved comfort and provides support during pregnancy
