Desk-based and Sedentary Working Environments
In modern day life, we find ourselves spending more time in stationary positions – at work, driving, on the train or bus and on the couch. We spend more time on our computers, on our phones, and in front of the TV.
This sedentary lifestyle leads to a variety of health concerns, and has even been labelled “Sitting Disease”, with some going as far as calling sitting the new smoking. Even if you are an active person, you might be spending enough time at your desk or behind the wheel to be putting your health at risk.
Poor workplace ergonomics and too much of any one specific posture can further compound the situation, leading to an increased risk of musculoskeletal and physiological disorders including:
- Neck, back and hip pain
- Degenerative disc disease
- Muscle stiffness
- Poor balance and mobility
- Respiratory conditions
- Cardiovascular conditions
While these disorders may seem obvious, a sedentary environment is also associated with a variety of nervous system disorders, including:
- Stress and anxiety
- Chronic fatigue
Physically Demanding Working Environments
Heavy lifting, physical exertion, working in awkward positions, or performing repetitive tasks are routine requirements of many occupations. The cumulative trauma caused by these activities results in adverse effects on health and leads to tendon, ligament, muscular, and skeletal injuries.
In many cases, a physically demanding occupation also requires many hours of sitting, exacerbating the negative impact on overall health and wellbeing.
Collectively, these health conditions are referred to as Work Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSDs), which are defined as injuries to the musculoskeletal or nervous systems. Such disorders can have a negative impact on your comfort and performance in the workplace, as well as the quality of your personal life.
